Such a depressing news

Just heard a news from a colleage. A 20-year-old kid ran into 2 classrooms at Virgina Tech. and randomly shot the students and professors in there. 22 were dead and 28 were injured.
Several of us felt so depressed by the news, and discussed about it. How can it happened? What's wrong with all these shootings? When the Bible teaches us not to hate because when you hate someone is equal to you killing someone. I just can't imagine how much hatred and anger a kid can have that he killed 22 people. What's the value of life?
